In a landmark moment, the Repco Supercars Championship has officially confirmed the dates for its first-ever New Zealand Double Header, scheduled for April 2026. The twin events will see the series race across both islands over two consecutive weekends — a long rumoured move that underscores Supercars’ deepening connection with its passionate Kiwi fanbase.

From 10–12 April, Supercars will roar into action at the Taupō International Motorsport Park in the central North Island, before shifting south to make its long-awaited South Island debut at Christchurch’s Ruapuna Raceway from 17–19 April.

Thi announcement confirms more than just dates — it signals a new era for motorsport in Aotearoa. For the first time in Supercars history, fans from both islands will have the opportunity to witness world-class racing in their own backyards across a single, action-packed month.

The return to Taupō marks Supercars’ third visit to the circuit, following the success of previous events, including a crowd of over 67,000 attendees in 2024. Taupō’s growing reputation as a fan-favourite venue made it an obvious choice to launch the double header.

Supercars CEO Shane Howard highlighted the significance of the announcement, stating:

“We are thrilled to officially confirm the dates for our inaugural New Zealand Double Header. Kicking off in Taupō and finishing in Christchurch, this is a major milestone for Supercars and a huge win for our fans and partners in Aotearoa.”

The addition of Ruapuna Raceway to the calendar is especially momentous, as it marks the Championship’s debut in the South Island — and with it, a long-anticipated reward for Christchurch’s motorsport community.

A Shared Commitment: 2026–2028

This isn’t just a one-off. Supercars has locked in a three-year hosting agreement with both Taupō and Ruapuna from 2026 to 2028, ensuring the continuation of the double header format and expanding the Championship’s footprint across New Zealand.

“We’re excited to build on [our past] success by bringing the Championship to the South Island for the very first time,” Howard said.

“With two back-to-back events showcasing New Zealand’s best circuits, passionate fans, and iconic locations, April 2026 is set to be one of the biggest months in Supercars history.”

Backing from Government and Community Leaders

The New Zealand Government has enthusiastically welcomed the announcement, with Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston noting the opportunity for extended visitor engagement and regional tourism growth.

“Having these two events on back-to-back weekends in April will really put tourism in the fast lane,” Minister Upston said.

“Supercars is a major drawcard with more than 3,300 international visitors attending the 2024 event in Taupō. I’m looking forward to seeing even more fans in 2026 and beyond.”

Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger echoed the excitement, describing the addition of Ruapuna as a transformative development for the city’s economy and sporting reputation.

“This is a massive moment for our city,” he said.

“Bringing the Championship to Christchurch will inject millions into our local economy and put us firmly on the global motorsport map.”

Years in the Making

The road to Ruapuna has been a long one, paved with dedication and perseverance by local motorsport advocates. The Canterbury Car Club and ChristchurchNZ have worked tirelessly to bring Supercars to the South Island, culminating in this breakthrough event.

Canterbury Car Club President Lewis Low expressed the pride and anticipation felt across the local motorsport community:

“Our volunteers and supporters have worked tirelessly to bring Supercars to the South Island, and now that dream becomes reality. April can’t come soon enough.”

Taupō: Ready to Reignite

Taupō District Mayor David Trewavas welcomed the continuation of Supercars’ presence in the region, crediting the event with providing a significant boost to the local economy and spirit.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Supercars back to Taupō from 2026–2028,” Trewavas said.

“The energy, the visitors, and the global attention this event brings is huge for our district.”

The Taupō International Motorsport Park has quickly earned its place as a staple on the Supercars calendar. CEO Josie Spillane credited the strength of the venue’s partnership with Supercars and the enthusiasm of Kiwi fans as key drivers of the double header’s expansion.

“Our team at Taupō have built an incredible base and relationship with Supercars,” she said.

“It’s fantastic to see off the back of that great partnership and massive Kiwi fan engagement that motorsport is being backed even further by Major Events NZ and race fans are being rewarded with a double header in NZ.”
