The Banya: A Modern Twist on a Traditional European Bathhouse

Nestled in the heart of Mullumbimby, The Banya has emerged as a unique experiential haven, breathing new life into the sun-baked bricks of a 1920’s bank. This one-of-a-kind establishment, the brainchild of local publican Brenden Lawless, seamlessly blends old-world charm with contemporary allure, making it the first of its kind in the area.

Preserving the original building was paramount to Lawless, who boasts a strong local presence and a keen business acumen. To achieve his vision, he enlisted the expertise of Mardi Borrack, an Interior Designer renowned for her background in the film industry and her proficiency in designing for specific periods, ensuring the preservation of the old bank’s history.

Local builders, Swell, meticulously transformed the building, paying homage to its rich past while incorporating modern elements designed to inspire relaxation in style. The result is a stunning fusion of the old and the new, inviting patrons into a world of contemporary fun and traditional wonder.

The Banya: A Modern Twist on a Traditional European Bathhouse

Lawless draws inspiration from European culture, where visiting a banya (bathhouse) is not merely a personal ritual but a social experience ingrained in their way of life. He remarks, “While we might go to the pub or a restaurant, they’ll go to the banya for a few hours: it’s food, it’s drinks, it’s wellness and connecting.” With this sentiment in mind, The Banya aims to offer a lifestyle experience that Northern NSW has never seen before.

Leading the team at The Banya is General Manager Carlee Bufalino, a well-known figure in the hospitality industry and the former owner and operator of Tasca in Coolangatta. With her expertise and passion for providing exceptional service, patrons can expect a memorable visit.

The Bathhouse itself boasts an array of features, including a tiled lap pool, three spacious hot mineral pools, a wood-fired sauna, a steam room, and a refreshing cold plunge. For those seeking relaxation beyond the thermal experiences, The Banya offers five massage treatment rooms and a rooftop sundeck, perfect for unwinding after indulging in the various offerings.

After luxuriating in the Bathhouse, guests are encouraged to extend their stay and savor a long lunch or enjoy a few drinks with friends. The on-site bar and dining options focus on casual refinement, offering small share plates and nutritious staples. Complementing the experience are an array of wines, cocktails, and health elixirs, specifically designed to enhance the bathhouse experience.

The Banya is inviting visitors to immerse themselves in its unique ambience.
