Top Gear Australia Returns Bigger, Bolder, and Better

Based on the debut episode, Top Gear Australia is on the right track, with potential to become a cherished addition to the franchise

Top Gear Australia is back, and it’s bigger, bolder, and better than ever. On Friday, the much-anticipated series roared into action on Paramount+, featuring Blair Joscelyne, Beau Ryan and Jonathan LaPaglia in the driver’s seat.

This revamp of the iconic global franchise doesn’t just represent a fresh start; it’s a high-octane declaration of intent. Paramount+ has clearly pulled out all the stops, with the production quality of the show evident from the get-go. And the first episode? A thrilling road trip to Italy where our trio of presenters got behind the wheels of some truly iconic supercars.

Jonathan La Pagalia was in a Pagani, Beau Ryan in a Ferrari, and Blair ” drove ” a Maserati. This traditional road trip, familiar to fans of the franchise, was captured in stunning detail, the cinematography harking back to the original show’s glory days. But this is just the beginning. Over the next seven parts of the series, the hosts and Australian Stig, will journey from our very own backyard to the French Alps’ winding roads, Rome’s historic streets, the glamorous St Tropez coastline, and even the rugged Colombian jungle.

Top Gear Australia, produced by BBC Studios Productions Australia, aims to be the ultimate destination for car enthusiasts and entertainment seekers across Australia and beyond. It’s fair to say that this is a far cry from the franchise’s initial, somewhat cringe-worthy foray into the Australian market back in 2010.

This new series also represents a first for streaming giant Paramount Plus, as it tests the waters by premiering Australian content on its international platform. It’s a bold move, but one that could pay off handsomely if the series continues to deliver the sorts of high-octane thrills evident in its first episode.

While the synergy between the hosts may need a bit of polishing in the initial stages, it’s a common aspect of any new production. There’s a good possibility that this talented trio will soon settle into their roles, developing a rapport that’s as entertaining and engaging as the series’ premise.

The new Top Gear Australia is taking on a significant legacy. The original trio of Clarkson, May, and Hammond have established a memorable dynamic over the years. However, based on the debut episode, Top Gear Australia is on the right track. Although still early days, with time and experience, it has the potential to become a cherished addition to the Top Gear franchise.
