Picking an SMSF accountant in Brisbane goes far beyond comparing price tags. One firm may bundle the independent audit, legal minutes and portal access, while the next hides those costs in the fine print. We examined dozens of local specialists and full-service practices, then shortlisted six that cleared our toughest filters. We scored each on SMSF depth, fee transparency, complex-asset skills and—after ASIC cancelled 43 auditor registrations in FY 2025-26—genuine audit independence. This guide is general information, not personal advice.
Quick answer: what you should compare first
A 20-minute discovery call flies by, so list your deal-breakers before you pick up the phone. Five signals separate an SMSF specialist from a generic tax shop:

SMSF specialisation. Ask how many SMSFs the firm processes each year, not how many business BAS returns. Consistent exposure matters now that Division 296 calculations and crypto wallets sit on the desk.
Independent audit governance. Clarify who signs the audit and where that person sits. ASIC recorded 64 enforcement actions in FY 2025-26, proving that “included” is not the same as “independent.”
Total annual fee, itemised. A headline “from $1,500” means little unless you confirm whether it covers the audit, software licences, BAS and property valuations.
Complex-asset capability. A shares-only fund can rely on automated feeds; four properties or DeFi tokens demand specialist workflows and higher quotes.
Scope of advice versus accounting. Accountants prepare the numbers; licensed advisers guide investments. Clarify the hand-off so you do not pay twice or miss advice you assumed was included.
Lock these five in first, and the firm profiles that follow will make far quicker sense.
The specialist lane
Specialist firms handle SMSFs all day, every day, often administering hundreds of funds through cloud platforms such as Class, BGL or SuperMate. Class reported 208,962 SMSFs on its platform at 30 June 2026, about 31.8% of all Australian SMSFs (2026 Class Annual Benchmark Report), showing how repeatable workflows fuel scale.
Because their work is tightly scoped, with simple share funds in one stream and property-plus-crypto funds in another, published price lists are usually clearer than those of broad tax practices. When Schedule 5 of the Treasury Laws Amendment (Tax Reform No. 1) Act 2026 limited most new residential-property LRBAs on 10 August 2026, these firms updated checklists and trustee minutes almost immediately.
Depth brings pay-offs. Specialists spot deed quirks early, chase auditors before deadlines and slot beside your existing business accountant if you need only SMSF help. The trade-off is breadth: a pure SMSF practice will not draft your company BAS or personal tax return, so you may juggle two or more advisers when you want every entity under one roof.
The full-service lane
Full-service practices fold SMSF compliance into the same engine that already lodges your company BAS, runs payroll and prepares personal tax returns. For many business owners that single relationship is the drawcard.
Why it works. One adviser can view every entity (trust, company and fund), so franked dividends and trust distributions settle neatly into your year-end tax plan.
Where it can slip. SMSFs may be a small slice of a big practice, so property valuations or crypto reconciliation can queue behind larger corporate jobs during the May rush. Independence also needs checking: if the in-house audit division signs your fund, ASIC expects documented safeguards, not just a different floor of the same building.
Bottom line. Pick a full-service firm when integrated advice matters more than laser-focused SMSF depth, but insist on a written scope, a named SMSF contact and the auditor’s ASIC registration before you sign.
Which road is better?
No single model fits every trustee. Decide by weighing two factors:

- Complexity of your fund. Multi-entity structures, property with an LRBA or crypto wallets often suit a specialist; a straight-shares fund within a wider family group can sit comfortably in a full-service workflow.
- Your preference for one adviser or several. Combining business, personal and SMSF work saves meeting time, yet it demands extra care on audit independence.
Whatever path you choose, ask for a written scope, a named SMSF contact and the ASIC registration number of the signing auditor. This overview is general information, not personal advice.
How we picked the six firms that made the cut
We started with more than 40 Brisbane-based SMSF providers found on Google’s first two organic pages and in three independent directories. From there, we applied four non-negotiable gates:
- Offers SMSF accounting or administration to Brisbane trustees (not audit-only or generic tax work).
- Holds a current Tax-Agent registration on the TPB public register.
- Lists at least one recognised SMSF or CA/CPA credential on its website.
- Explains, on record, how the annual independent audit is arranged.
Providers that cleared these gates were scored against seven weighted criteria: specialisation depth, complex-asset capability, credentials, audit governance, fee transparency, technology and communication standards. We ignored star ratings because they rarely separate SMSF work from broader practice reviews.
Six firms passed every hurdle; their profiles follow.
1. SMSF Australia: best for published audit-inclusive pricing and in-house legal support
According to its Brisbane service page, SMSF Australia Pty Ltd publishes fixed, audit-inclusive fees that scale with asset complexity rather than fund size (last verified July 2026):

SMSF Australia Brisbane SMSF Accounting Website Screenshot.
- Basic (bank accounts, term deposits, listed shares, managed funds) $1,300 + GST
- Complex (up to 2 direct properties, crypto, precious metals, collectibles) $1,600 + GST
- Very complex (3 or more properties, unlisted assets, private loans, derivatives, NFTs, contraventions) from $2,000 + GST
Every tier covers financial statements, compliance documents, a dedicated accountant, the annual independent audit, tax return lodgement, a Class Super licence and annual BAS if you register for GST. If your fund holds crypto, remember the deed must permit it, the investment strategy must cover it, the wallet must be in the fund’s name, it can’t be acquired from a related party and it must be valued at 30 June.
All work – accounts, tax return and bare-trust deeds – happens inside an SMSF-only unit that employs in-house SMSF lawyers and certified SMSF accountants. That expertise matters when a deed tweak or LRBA refinance lands after the 10 August 2026 rule change. Service is national through Zoom and cloud software.
What you won’t get is investment advice. The practice sticks to accounting, tax and SMSF legal documents, leaving product selection to licensed advisers. If you want a fixed, audit-inclusive fee and fast access to SMSF lawyers, add this specialist to your shortlist.
2. SMSF Alliance: best for specialist Brisbane administration
SMSF Alliance is based in Woolloongabba and administers funds through a secure cloud portal. Its July 2026 fee schedules offer two adviser-supported bundles:
- Gold package: $1,860 a year, GST-inclusive (adviser-referred clients only)
- Platinum package: $2,340 a year, GST-inclusive (also available direct)
Trustees dealing with the firm directly use its Direct Trustee Fee Schedule: Platinum at $2,340 a year plus a panel audit fee of $622.
What’s inside the bundles? Establishment deeds, annual accounts, portal access and coordination of an independent audit. Property or crypto assets can lift the price, so ask for a written scope that matches your investments.
Checklist before you sign:
- Confirm which schedule applies to you.
- Ask who will sign the audit and for their ASIC registration number.
- Clarify any extras such as actuarial certificates or prior-year catch-up work.
If you want specialist SMSF administration, transparent published pricing and the option to visit a Brisbane office, SMSF Alliance is worth a call.
3. Insight Super: best for a specialist superannuation team
Insight Super operates from Paxton Street in Springwood, south of Brisbane’s CBD. It manages funds that pay the ATO supervisory levy of $518 in year one and $259 in later years. The publicly named team includes Chartered Accountants, an SMSF Specialist Adviser and a Master of Taxation graduate, so the people handling your file speak the same technical language as ATO reviewers.
Depth shows once your fund moves beyond plain-vanilla shares. The practice handles transition-to-retirement pensions, breach rectification and strategy tweaks as balances approach the $3 million Division 296 threshold. Pricing is quote-only, so the team will review your asset mix, property paperwork and member balances before giving numbers.
One caution: Insight Super prepares accounts and also holds SMSF-auditor registration. Ask who will sign your audit, note their ASIC registration number and confirm that independence remains intact.
If you want a named, credential-rich team within driving distance of Brisbane and you are comfortable requesting a tailored quote, keep Insight Super on your shortlist.
4. Vincents: best for complex and high-net-worth affairs
Vincents’ Brisbane CBD superannuation team is led by director Brett Griffiths (CA, CPA, SMSF Specialist Adviser) and associate director Alex Liu. Their daily work covers estate-planning tax, death-benefit strategies, family-law splits and CGT relief on restructures—issues that rarely fit inside a low-cost, volume SMSF workflow.
Pricing is bespoke. A discovery call maps every entity in your structure before numbers land in your inbox, so expect a higher quote than a niche specialist if you only hold listed shares. The premium buys depth: forensic valuation support, in-house tax advisory and access to the firm’s audit, corporate-finance and litigation teams when things get messy.
Audit independence needs a closer look because Vincents offers both accounting and audit services under separate divisions. Ask to see the engagement split and confirm the ASIC registration of the signing auditor.
Choose Vincents when your SMSF sits inside a wider financial web—multiple trusts, commercial property, large pension balances—or when succession and estate planning top your agenda.
5. Walker Hill: best for business owners wanting one accounting practice
Walker Hill runs its SMSF, business-advisory and bookkeeping teams from Petrie Terrace in Brisbane, supporting clients nationally through cloud portals and video calls.

Indicative fees (FAQ accessed July 2026):
- Two-member share portfolio $2,000–$3,000 for accounting and tax
- Property or multi-asset fund $3,500–$6,000+
- Independent audit, quoted separately, $600–$1,200
Because the firm already manages payroll, BAS and company tax for many clients, business owners enjoy one set of logins and a single calendar of deadlines. Live data flows through a cloud ledger (Walker Hill uses Xero and Class), so company dividends can reconcile automatically into the fund.
Watch-points
- Confirm the total “all-in” cost once the separate audit, portal licence and any actuarial or BAS work are added.
- Audit fees: the median SMSF audit fee is $550, so compare their $600–$1,200 range with the market.
If you want one relationship from shopfront to super fund and are happy to pay an itemised audit fee, Walker Hill’s integrated model is worth exploring.
6. Marsh & Partners: best for a relationship-led full-service approach
Marsh & Partners is a Brisbane practice known for long-term client relationships. Its SMSF team covers setup, annual accounts, deed reviews and investment-strategy documents, then brings in the wider tax advisory arm when business or estate questions arise.
Access and pricing. The firm offers a free one-hour consultation to map assets, property records and any prior-year issues. Annual fees follow that meeting, so ask for an itemised scope that lists audit, BAS and actuarial work.
Technical edge. In-house deed reviews mean LRBA tweaks or pension refreshes do not need a separate law firm, useful after the 10 August 2026 borrowing changes.
Due-diligence checklist.
- Confirm who signs the independent audit and whether that person sits outside the Marsh & Partners ownership group.
- Compare the final quote with the median SMSF operating expense of $4,400 so you know whether the full-service premium is fair.
- Request a written fee schedule once your asset complexity is clear.
Pick Marsh & Partners if you want one adviser from business sale through retirement draw-down and you are happy to wait until after the consultation for a formal quote.
Side-by-side comparison at a glance
Last verified: July 2026. “Fee” figures are the firm’s published starting prices for a two-member fund unless noted; always request a written scope.
| Firm | Model | Local access | Starting annual fee (incl./excl. GST) | Audit status | Complex-asset notes | In-house legal? | Software | Best fit | Key caveat |
| SMSF Australia | SMSF-only specialist | National via Zoom and cloud software | $1,300 + GST | Included & independent | Tiered by asset complexity, not fund size | Yes | Class | Fixed, audit-inclusive fee | No AFSL, so no financial advice |
| SMSF Alliance | SMSF admin specialist | Woolloongabba office | Gold $1,860 / Platinum $2,340 (GST incl.) | Included & independent (confirm package) | Extra costs for property, trusts | No | Proprietary portal | Published admin bundles | Multiple schedules can confuse |
| Insight Super | Super specialist team | Springwood office | Quote only | Confirm separation (firm also holds audit reg.) | Handles pensions, breach rectification | No | Not stated | Depth of specialist team | No public fees |
| Vincents | Full-service firm | CBD office | Quote only | Separate audit division—verify independence | Estates, death benefits, HNW structures | Network access | Not stated | Complex affairs | Premium for simple funds |
| Walker Hill | Full-service, digital-first | Petrie Terrace + virtual | $2,000–$3,000 (GST unclear) | Audit extra $600–$1,200 | Property, crypto lifts fee to $3.5k–$6k+ | No | Xero + Class | One-stop for business owners | Add audit, BAS before comparing |
| Marsh & Partners | Full-service relationship focus | Brisbane office | Quote only | Confirm entity and independence | Deed reviews, strategy docs in-house | No | Not stated | Long-term adviser continuity | Pricing only after consult |
Treat these figures as directional. Before you sign, always ask for:
- An itemised scope that matches your asset mix.
- The ASIC registration number of the signing auditor.
- Confirmation of software access and any extras such as BAS, actuarial certificates or takeover work.
What an annual SMSF quote should really cover
A yearly SMSF bill should spell out every moving part so you can compare value, not guess inclusions.

Core compliance (every fund needs these):
- Financial statements and member statements
- SMSF annual return and tax-agent lodgement
- Independent audit (named ASIC-registered auditor)
- Trustee minutes and resolutions
- Secure portal access for year-round transaction feeds
Common extras that shift the headline price:
| Extra | Typical trigger | Indicative cost range* |
| Property valuation & lease review | Each real-property asset | $150–$400 |
| Actuarial certificate | Pension + accumulation mix | $99–$200 |
| Quarterly BAS | GST-registered property | $180 + GST per lodgement |
| Crypto reconciliation | Multiple wallets/exchanges | Varies; often time-based |
| LRBA deed amendments | Post-10 Aug 2026 rules | Quote only |
| Catch-up / contravention work | Late returns or ATO breach | Quote only |
*Ranges drawn from July 2026 public fee guides and firm schedules; always confirm in writing.
Before you sign, request an itemised scope that shows:
- GST treatment for each line.
- Who pays the audit invoice and the auditor’s ASIC number.
- Whether portal access and data ownership continue if you change providers.
Written transparency today prevents “surprise” invoices tomorrow.
1. New limits on borrowing for residential property (effective 10 August 2026)
Schedule 5 of the Treasury Laws Amendment (Tax Reform No. 1) Act 2026 now blocks most new SMSF loans for residential property unless the asset qualifies as business real property. Existing residential LRBAs are grandfathered, but any new arrangement must meet the tighter test.

Why this matters when choosing an accountant
- Rolling over an existing LRBA? A mis-step can breach s 67A and trigger non-arm’s-length tax.
- Deeds and bare-trust documents may need updates, so in-house legal support shifts from nice-to-have to essential.
- Annual property valuations and lease evidence now face closer ATO scrutiny, lifting the record-keeping bar.
Questions to ask prospective firms
- How many grandfathered residential LRBAs do you currently service?
- Who drafts or reviews bare-trust deeds and refinance documents?
- Is refinancing advice included in the annual fee or billed under a separate legal engagement?
2. Division 296 kicks in from the 2026–27 income year
Under Division 296 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 (inserted by legislation assented 13 March 2026) a member whose combined super balance exceeds $3 million on 30 June pays an extra 15 percent tax (or 25 percent above $10 million) on a share of the fund’s realised earnings from 1 July 2026 onward. Unrealised gains are excluded.
Why this matters even below the line
Accurate historical cost bases, annual valuations and member-level ledgers are now mandatory. A missing number could inflate—or understate—the surcharge when a balance finally tops $3 million.
Questions to put on your shortlist call
- How will you track historical cost bases and realised gains for each member?
- What 30 June valuation evidence do you accept for property, private trusts and crypto?
- Can your portal generate Division 296 statements automatically, or will that be a manual (billable) job?
Platforms such as Class, BGL and SuperMate handle much of the lift. If a provider hesitates on any of the three questions, keep looking. The ATO will not forgive bad data.
3. ASIC is watching SMSF auditors closely
ASIC’s FY 2025-26 enforcement report shows 64 actions against SMSF auditors, including 43 registration cancellations. Trustees who assume “audit included” equals “audit independent” risk a rude shock.
Independence is the focus. When the same firm prepares the accounts and signs the audit, ASIC expects documented safeguards, or better, a legally separate audit entity. The limited routine-or-mechanical exemption only covers basic data entry; it will not save a conflicted workflow.
Use this three-point check on your discovery call:
- Who signs the audit, and what is their ASIC registration number?
- Where do they sit—inside a separately owned audit firm or down the hall?
- How are independence threats identified and mitigated if both services are under one roof?
If the answers feel vague, keep shopping.
Questions to ask before you sign on the dotted line
A glossy proposal can hide nasty add-ons. Use this checklist, grouped by theme, to uncover gaps before you hand over your ledger.
Capacity & communication
- How many SMSFs does my assigned team manage?
- What is your typical email turnaround—24, 48 or 72 hours?
- Who will be my day-to-day contact (name and role)?
Audit independence
4. Who signs the independent audit, and what is their ASIC registration number?
5. Is that auditor part of the same ownership group as the accountant? If yes, show me the documented safeguards.
Pricing clarity
6. Does the quoted annual fee include GST, the audit fee, portal access and software licences?
7. Which assets or events trigger a higher fee (property, private loans, collectibles, crypto)?
8. Are BAS, actuarial certificates and extra pension accounts built in, or billed separately?
9. What does takeover or prior-year catch-up work cost if my last accountant fell behind?
Process & evidence
10. How are 30 June property valuations and lease documents collected?
11. What evidence do you need for crypto wallets and exchange trades?
12. Will I keep portal access to all source documents if I leave?
Data security & conflicts
13. Is any processing or data storage offshore? If so, which country and what security standard?
14. Do you receive referral fees from property agents, brokers or advisers you introduce?
Conclusion
Brisbane trustees can choose between an SMSF-only specialist and a full-service practice, and the trade-off is depth against breadth. The firms above publish different amounts of detail about fees, audit governance and the platforms they run, which is the fastest way to sort them. Take the questions above to each shortlisted firm and compare the answers side by side. A confident firm answers each question with specifics—dates, dollar figures and names. Vague assurances are your cue to keep shopping.
