If you’re visiting Australia for the first time, then you need to know one thing about them: they love sport, particularly the AFL! It shows up everywhere. At barbecues, in offices, at the pub, and even in casual small talk with strangers. Known as Australian Rules Football, Aussie rules, or simply the footy, it is fast, physical, loud, and deeply woven into everyday life. If you’re new to the sport, this guide will get you up to speed.

Why Australians love AFL

For many, the AFL is more than just a recreational activity; it becomes part of their culture. Many people grow up supporting the same teams as their parents and grandparents supported, and loyalty runs deep.

Match days are social events, with families and friends planning weekends around games, whether they are heading to the stadium or watching from home. The sport itself is exciting to watch. It is fast-paced, high-scoring, and constantly moving, with very few stoppages.

There is also a strong sense of tradition, especially in states like Victoria, where AFL has been played for well over a century. Once you understand the basics, it becomes very easy to see why people get so invested.

The basics you need to know

When you first watch an AFL game, it’ll probably look chaotic to you, especially if you’re not too familiar with the sport. The good news is that it’s not too difficult to learn. The key here is to know that the game is built around being fast-paced, using space well, and fitness.

The game is played with an oval-shaped ball on a large oval field. There are no offsides, and players can move freely across the ground. This creates a flowing style of play that rewards fitness, skill, and quick decision-making. Once you accept that it will look messy at first, it becomes much easier to follow.

How teams and players are set up

Each team has eighteen players on the field at any one time, which is a lot compared to most sports. On top of that, four players on the interchange bench can rotate on and off throughout the game. These rotations are used strategically to keep players fresh and manage injuries.

Players generally fall into roles like defenders, midfielders, forwards, and ruckmen, but positions are flexible. Midfielders run almost nonstop, defenders focus on stopping goals, forwards try to score, and ruckmen contest the ball at stoppages. The constant rotation and movement mean roles often overlap.

How a game is played

An AFL match is made up of four quarters, each lasting twenty minutes plus additional time for stoppages. At the start of each quarter, the umpire bounces the ball in the centre of the ground, and both teams contest possession. From there, play flows continuously.

Tackling is allowed, but only between the shoulders and knees. Players must dispose of the ball correctly when tackled, either by kicking or handballing.

How scoring works

Scoring in the AFL is simple once you see it a few times. There are four posts at each end of the ground. The two taller middle posts are the goal posts, and the shorter outer posts are the behind posts.

A goal is worth six points and is scored when the ball is kicked cleanly between the two middle posts without being touched. A behind is worth one point and is scored when the ball passes between a middle and outer post, hits a post, or is touched before crossing the line. Scores are shown as goals, behinds, and total points.

How the ball moves around the field

Players move the ball by kicking, handballing, and running. A handball involves holding the ball in one hand and punching it with the other. Throwing the ball is not allowed. When a player cleanly catches a teammate’s kicked ball without it touching the ground, it is called a mark.

This gives the player a free kick, allowing them time to choose their next move. Marks are a huge part of the game and one of the most exciting skills to watch, especially when players leap high in the air.

Another extremely popular sport in Australia is sports betting. Betting on the AFL helps you feel like you’re a part of all the action. But it’s also an easy way to lose your money. That’s why you need to check sites like Ladbrokes for AFL betting tips so you can go in with a game plan and potentially make a winning bet.

Final thoughts

AFL can feel overwhelming at first, but it does not take long before things start to click. The more games you watch, the easier it becomes to follow the flow, recognise players, and understand tactics. Most Australians are more than happy to explain the rules and debate teams with you.
