Today we are catching up with Darcy Spinks of Victoria, one of the 27 talented and inspiring women from all walks of life who are hoping to be crowned Miss Universe Australia 2022.
So Darcy, why don’t you tell us a little about yourself?
Hi Guys, well, I am 26 years old from Melbourne.
I grew up on a cattle and sheep farm in North East Victoria and moved to Melbourne at the age of 18 to continue my modelling career that I began at the ripe age of 8 years old.
I am a young female entrepreneur; I launched my first business at the age of 23, which is a Digital Marketing and Events Agency called Two Evolve, and I have just recently launched my second business, which is an ethically sourced sustainable clothing label called “Ambition The Label.
One thing you should know about me is that I love a challenge, and I believe in never holding yourself back because of fear.
We all have motivations, mine usually around good coffee, but what was your key motivation for entering Miss Universe Australia?
I can’t say no to a good coffee, haha. My motivation for entering Miss Universe Australia was to push myself outside of my comfort zone, become more confident in who I am and strengthen my public speaking and presenting skills.
Being a young woman in business, every single day has a new challenge, and I believe that there is always room for growth and improvement in whatever field of work you are in.
Another one of my key motivations for entering was to hopefully inspire other young women to follow in my footsteps, to be strong and confident and never hold themselves back.
As part of the program, you recently spent time in our hometown of the Gold Coast with the Village Roadshow team; what was the experience like?
And what a wonderful week it was! From swimming with sharks at Sea World to glamorous dinners & photoshoots to running around at Movie World & WetnWild on the rides, we really did squeeze so much into our trip, and we all felt very spoilt.
I took the week to get to know the other girls, which is my favourite part about the whole competition, making new friends from all over Australia.
I found myself forgetting it was a competition.. is it wrong that I want everyone to win..? Haha.
It was an incredible experience, and I can’t wait to be back on the Gold Coast this week for the final!
What would you say was the highlight of your trip?
The highlight of my trip was definitely having the opportunity to shoot my official swim shoot in the lagoon at Sea World, literally right next to Dolphins. I have been modelling since the age of 8 years old and have done some pretty cool shoots, but nothing quite compares to shooting with the incredible MUA team next to one of my favourite animals.. it was surreal. (A big pinch me moment)
With everyone bringing their own unique and individual flair to the program, what is something that sets you apart from the other contestants?
Something that I believe sets me apart from the other contestants is my ability to adapt to any situation that I am thrown into and my motivation/drive to go after my goals.
Having grown up on a farm and moved to Melbourne at 18, I have had to hustle to make connections and develop a name for myself as a model, influencer and business owner. However, if there is anything my upbringing on the farm has taught me, it’s adaptability. Whether I am in Melbourne attending an important event or in the country at a local pub, I pride myself on always being open and able to connect with everyone and find common ground.
Your next question comes from our current Miss Universe Australia, Daria Varlamova; in your opinion, what are the most essential qualities that a Miss Universe Australia embodies?
The most important qualities, in my opinion, are being confident, proactive and approachable. I feel a Miss Universe Australia needs to be confident in who she is and what she brings to the table, she needs to be proactive in the sense that she is motivated and willing to work, and she, most importantly, needs to be approachable, because Miss Universe Australia is a very important role and you need to be a friendly and warm person that people want to interact and work alongside.
Now travel is back on the cards; where is your favourite place to travel to?
My favourite place is honestly anywhere in Australia. So many people are quick to travel overseas and forget we have the most incredible places to visit right in our own backyard. Australia has so much to offer and truly has the most beautiful beaches.. one of my favourite beaches is just outside of Noosa called rainbow beach, where my partner and I pulled out a swag and camped right on the beach.
(I highly recommend camping on this beach.. add it to your bucket list, give it a try and thank me later)
What is something people may find interesting about you?
When I was 19, I competed in an amateur charity boxing match.. and won. This was something that was and still is completely outside of my comfort zone, but it is an excellent example of who I am and what I’m capable of when I really put my mind to something.
I was raised to fight (not literally but metaphorically) for what I wanted in life, and stepping into a ring was one of the most terrifying things, but I had put in the hard work. I trained every morning with the others competing for 8 weeks straight, and outside of this, I did extra sessions. Because I knew if I wanted to win, I had to push myself both physically and mentally.
This is the best example to help build a picture of who I am.. without just looking at me (I definitely don’t look like a fighter or even a farmer, haha). I am someone that does not shy away from hard work and always jumps at a challenge. Even if the odds aren’t in my favour, I will hustle and find a way.
Tell us something you’re passionate about and why?
I am passionate about business. I come from a family of business owners, and from a young age have always found myself gravitating towards one day starting my own.
Fast forward to now, I am 26 years old and am the co-founder of a Digital Marketing and Events Agency called “Two Evolve” I have just recently launched my second business, which is an ethically sourced sustainable clothing label called “Ambition The Label”.
Being a young female entrepreneur, I have found another passion that involves inspiring other young women to follow in my footsteps and never hold themselves back from what they want to do or achieve. I want to lead by example and show others that you can achieve whatever you put your mind to, as long as you are confident and believe in yourself.
