The City of Gold Coast has expanded its Beach Access Program with the installation of three new beach wheelchair lockboxes at Miami, Paradise Point and Labrador. The initiative aims to improve coastal accessibility for residents and visitors.
These new locations build on the two existing self-service facilities at Burleigh Beach. Division 12 Councillor Nick Marshall outlined the financial commitment behind the rollout.
"Since 2024, the City has invested more than $250,000 to install and maintain these lockboxes, supporting our goal of creating a city where everyone feels included," Cr Marshall said.
Self-Service Accessibility
The programme allows residents and visitors to access equipment independently. Cr Marshall highlighted the positive reception of the initial facilities.
"The lockboxes at Burleigh have been extremely popular, with user satisfaction currently at 100 per cent," he said.
He also explained how the system operates.
"Each lockbox contains a free-to-borrow beach wheelchair, instruction manual and life vest and users can unlock it by scanning a QR code for quick and easy access."
While designed for accessibility, the equipment caters to a broad range of community needs. Cr Marshall noted that beach wheelchairs are not exclusively used by people with a disability.
"They also support seniors, people with medical conditions, chronic illness or temporary injuries to enjoy our beautiful beaches and swimming enclosures," he said.
Broader Community Partnerships
The lockboxes form part of the City’s broader Beach Access Program, which is delivered in partnership with local surf clubs and community organisations. Beach wheelchairs and beach matting can be borrowed free of charge through these program partners or via the self-service lockboxes located across the city.
The new lockboxes are located near the corner of Hythe Street and Marine Parade at Miami Beach, near the Paradise Point swimming enclosure, and near the Ian Dipple Lagoon swimming enclosure at Labrador. People seeking further details are directed to visit Beach Wheelchairs and Matting.
