Inside Queenstown: The New Netflix Luxury Ski Town Drama

Netflix is heading to New Zealand for Queenstown, an eight episode series exploring power, class and family.

This morning, Netflix announced its latest project, which is heading straight to the iconic landscapes of New Zealand. The new eight-episode series, Queenstown, is officially in the works, marking a major milestone as the first ANZ-commissioned Netflix series to be set and shot entirely in the country.

Produced by Silent Firework and Runaway Unicorn, Queenstown aims to be a gripping watch. Set against the glamorous backdrop of the iconic ski town, the show will explore intense themes of power, class and family dynamics.

A Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team

The series boasts an impressive lineup of talent. Viewers can expect to see Emmy nominee Rufus Sewell alongside Frances O’Connor, Alycia Debnam-Carey and Te Kohe Tuhaka bringing the story to life.

Behind the camera, the creative team is just as strong. Executive Producers Jodi Matterson and Libbie Doherty shared their excitement about the project, highlighting the creative minds leading the charge:

“When creating The Silent Firework Group and Runaway Unicorn, our vision was to champion bold, distinctive storytelling, and Queenstown delivers on every front. In Chloe Stearns, we’ve found an extraordinary new voice, and we’re thrilled to have our partner, Glendyn Ivin, at the helm alongside an exceptional cast. We’re incredibly grateful to Amanda Duthie and the entire Netflix team for backing our vision to help bring what we believe will become audiences’ next obsession.”

Filming in New Zealand is not just about the beautiful scenery; it is also a significant boost for the local film industry. The production is supported by the New Zealand Film Commission and the Screen Production Rebate.

Amanda Duthie, the Netflix ANZ Content Director, expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming series and the local opportunities it creates:

“Queenstown draws an exceptional team of talent and creatives, surrounded by this breathtaking environment. Shooting our first locally commissioned series here in New Zealand is a huge moment for us. This is a bold, propulsive story of power, class and family set against the opulent world of a luxury ski town, and we can’t wait for our members to fall in love with this series the way we have. Along with a terrific screen sector, and with support from the New Zealand Film Commission and the Screen Production Rebate, we’re delighted that this production is creating opportunities for local crew, businesses and emerging talent while bringing this story to life.”

What is Next for Netflix ANZ

Queenstown will be released globally on Netflix. It joins an impressive and growing slate of locally made productions. Fans can also look forward to other upcoming releases like My Brilliant Career and the New Zealand-shot East of Eden, which join recently released hits such as Boy Swallows Universe, Apple Cider Vinegar, The Survivors, Territory and Heartbreak High S3.
