We caught up with Katherine ahead of the 2012 Miss Universe Australia National Final in Melbourne, get to know her here

Hi Katherine — thanks for taking the time to sit down and have a chat with us today! First of all, congratulations on making it through to the finals next month.

Excited?

Thank you for having me! I’m very excited about the finals and can’t wait to see the other girls again.

After an action-packed weekend, what is next in your preparation for the finals?

Lots of healthy eating! I try to drink around two litres of water a day and have a lot of vegetables in my diet. I love to get outdoors and exercise in the fresh air, so I’ll be doing plenty of that too!

What prompted you to take the leap into the Miss Universe Australia pageant?

I am involved in a lot of charity and volunteer work with children, and I think the Miss Universe Australia pageant is a platform which promotes young women and celebrates beauty that comes from the inside and not just the outside — and that is something I really wanted to be a part of.

Miss Universe Australia has opened up a lot of opportunities to entrants in the past. What kind of opportunities do you think this competition will open up for you?

I think the Miss Universe Australia pageant opens up a lot of opportunities for entrants to become spokespeople for organisations and causes they are passionate about — but mostly I am just looking forward to the experience.

A lot of people underestimate the pageant girl — their mistake! What has been your most rewarding experience so far?

My most rewarding experience so far was representing Australia at the World Tap Dancing Championships in Germany in 2009. It was a humbling experience representing my country, and it was also fascinating to see the different dancing styles from around the world!

What city do you belong to? Tell us a little about where you grew up.

I currently live in Brisbane but I grew up in Ipswich — a community rich in values at the core of Australian culture. I was proud to see Ipswich come together to rebuild after the devastating floods last year.

There are a lot of impressive people involved in the Miss Universe Australia pageant. What makes you stand out — what have you got that the other girls don’t?

I think that each person is a reflection of their own experiences, and it is those experiences that make each girl different. It is my individuality that sets me apart and will make me stand out.

Everyone has a mission in life — what do you think yours is?

I believe my mission is to live a fulfilling and happy life, to bring joy to those around me and to help others achieve their goals as well.

Thanks again for chatting with us, Katherine — and best of luck in the finals!
