Cara Mooney - Miss Universe Australia 2025 Finalist Interview

Today we’re chatting with Cara Mooney from Western Australia, one of 30 remarkable women vying for the Miss Universe Australia 2025 crown

Today we’re chatting with Cara Mooney from Western Australia, one of 30 remarkable women vying for the Miss Universe Australia 2025 crown, to be decided on August 15 at Crown Perth’s Grand Ballroom.

So, why don’t you start by telling us a bit about yourself?

I’m from Fremantle, Western Australia. I’m 21 years old and have just completed a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Public Relations and Marketing. I’m excited to step into the industry and find a role that aligns with my passion for storytelling and creative expression.

What inspired you to take the leap and enter Miss Universe Australia?

I followed a friend’s journey last year and she had such a transformative and positive experience, it really inspired me to look into the program. As I learned more, I felt everything the program stands for aligned with my values. The chance to meet and connect with like-minded women from across the country was something I couldn’t pass up. On top of that, the fundraising aspect has been incredibly rewarding and motivating for me.

As part of the program, you had the amazing opportunity to travel to Vietnam, and stay at the beautiful Hoiana Resort. How was that experience for you?

Staying at the stunning Hoiana Resort in Vietnam with the Miss Universe Australia team was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It’s surreal to travel across the world with such an incredible team of professionals and 30 strong, inspiring women from all corners of Australia. From the breathtaking scenery to the unforgettable moments we shared, I had to keep pinching myself and it was an experience I’ll cherish forever.

What would you say was the highlight of the trip?

My highlight was the full-day workshop with the National Institute of Dramatic Art. Having studied drama at school and with a passion for public speaking, it truly felt like a dream come true. The opportunity to learn from the NIDA team, such talented and respected industry professionals, was both inspiring and an invaluable experience I will draw on in the future.

As part of the trip, you also took part in your official swimwear shoot with Unnecessary the Label. How was that experience for you?

To say it was a dream would be an understatement. My shoot was set on the beach, under a palm tree, holding a coconut. It felt like something straight out of a magazine. When Sophia showed me the inspiration photo I couldn’t believe it, I have had that exact image saved to my Pinterest board for years. It felt like one of those full-circle moments.

Your next question comes from our current Miss Universe Australia, Zoe Creed. If your younger self could see you today, not just on this stage but as a person, what do you think she’d be most proud of and why?

I think my younger self would be proud that I’ve stayed true to who I am. Growing up, it’s easy to feel pressure to change or to fit into certain expectations, but I’ve always tried to hold onto my values and my sense of purpose. She’d be proud that I’ve embraced every challenge as an opportunity to grow, while continuing to pour my heart and determination into everything I do.

With everyone bringing their own unique flair to the program, what would you say sets you apart from the other contestants?

Whether I’m on stage, backstage, off-camera or just at home, I show up as the same person, grounded, kind, and genuine. I believe true impact comes not just from what we achieve publicly, but how we treat people when no one’s watching. I move through life knowing that quiet integrity and authenticity speak louder than anything else.

What’s something about you that people might find surprising or interesting?

People may be surprised to know I love camping! Every year since I can remember, my family and I spend two weeks completely off-grid in WA’s North West on the Ningaloo coast. With no reception, no shops, no running water, just us and the beach. I love embracing that simple lifestyle, it reconnects me with nature and grounds me.

If you could work on any dream project, with no limits on time or resources, what would it be?

If I could work on a dream project, it would be a nationwide campaign raising awareness about skin cancer, specifically aimed at young women. Over the past few years, I’ve watched social media spread misinformation and promote harmful trends that encourage young girls to be outside during high UV levels, achieve tan lines, and avoid fake tanning to achieve a “natural” look in the sun. This trend is deeply concerning, especially when you consider that two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer at some point in their lives. If I had the opportunity, I’d create a campaign to educate and “de-influence” the younger generation, encouraging them to make safer choices and avoid these dangerous habits.

We have a few quick questions to wrap up the interview:

What’s a song that never fails to lift your mood?
“You Belong with Me” by Taylor Swift is a song I used to dance and sing endlessly growing up, and no matter where I am, it always brings a smile to my face.

What does confidence mean to you?
To me, confidence isn’t about being the loudest in the room, it’s about knowing who you are, even when no one is watching. It’s the quiet strength to show up as yourself, speak your truth, and back yourself, even when it feels uncomfortable.

If you had to swap lives with someone for a day, who would it be and why?
If I could swap lives with anyone for a day, it would be Tree Paine. Tree Paine founded Premium Public Relations in 2014 and only has one client, Taylor Swift. Having studied PR and Marketing, I would love to have a front-row seat to the fast-paced decision making, strategising and problem solving that keeps Taylor’s image and brand so strong.

What’s one thing you always have in your handbag (besides your phone)?
My Canon camera never leaves my side! I’m always capturing life through my lens, from everyday moments to special memories with friends and family.

Window or aisle seat on a flight?
Definitely the window seat! I love the view and it’s the perfect spot to get lost in my thoughts without interruptions.
